Evidence against Shafia who is charged with murdering four Shafia women in an alleged case of “honour killing” must be evaluated considering the reality that “his efforts were all directed toward the well-being of his children,” said Shafia’s lawyer Peter Kemp Tuesday.
Kemp raised questions in the courtroom regarding the women allegedly being abused and oppressed within the Shafia family while they were alive. Moreover, the jurors were requested not to sway by the huge attention the trial has drawn.
Moreover, Kemp said the jury heard several statements made by Muhammad Shafia on wiretaps, but according to him Shafia was only angry since he find out about pictures of his daughters after their deaths. He insists that none are admissions of guilt.
Earlier, the jury heard from teachers, social workers and police about reports from Shafia daughters that they were afraid of their father and brother.
Shafia family basically belongs to Afghanistan. They came to Quebec in 2007. Muhammad Shafia is charged along with his second wife, Tooba Mohammad Yahya, and their eldest son Hamed with four counts of first-degree murder.
They were allegedly held responsible for drowning Shafia sisters Zainab, Sahar and Geeti, and wife Rona, whose bodies were found in a submerged car.
