Tori Stafford trial that began this morning was suddenly delayed before Crown attorneys gave their opening address. After Mr. Justice Thomas Heeny gave his opening statement, the court staffers abruptly requested the room emptied and lawyers agreed on having closed-door debate.

The reason behind the delay is unclear and it is uncertain when the trial might be resumed. Mr. Justice Heeny had already alarmed the jurors that much of the testimony could perhaps be unsettling.

Tori’s father, Rodney Stafford, said: “I’ve been waiting for this for nearly three years now. Time to get it over with! Soon enough, we will see justice.”

Michael Thomas Christopher Stephen Rafferty is accused of killing, abducting and sexually assaulting eight-year-old Victoria Stafford (Tori) who disappeared on her way home from school almost three years ago.

“The allegations in this case are horrible,” Rafferty’s lawyer, Dirk Derstine, said last week. “It’s very important that everybody keep an open mind and everybody not have a rush to judgment.”

Victoria’s remains were found in July 2009 and an autopsy report discovered the girl had died from multiple blunt force traumas. This incident attracted a lot of national and international media attention.

Journalists started to gather outside the courthouse around 5.30 a.m. They are allowed to use electronic devices in the court; however, they are advised not to broadcast any information from there.
