Graham James has been sentenced to two years in prison on Tuesday in Winnipeg court. Disgraced junior hockey coach James pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two of his former players, Todd Holt and Theo Fleury, back in 1980s and ‘90s.

The court learned that James continuously assaulted the players for many years while they were still teenagers. The Crown was urging the court for a six-year prison term against the demands of James’ lawyer, Evan Roitenberg, of a conditional ‪sentence of up to 18 months.

Last week, Judge Catherine Carlson made the announcement to ban all the live TV cameras for Tuesday’s hearing. She said: “This case is highly charged enough. It’s not going to become a spectacle. The court also has serious concerns about setting precedent in a sexual assault case.”

The media, represented by lawyer Bob Sokalski, said: “The public has a right to know who has been convicted and what they look like … so the public can know and protect themselves!”

This was not the first time when James was accused and charged of such gruesome crimes. In 1997, James pleaded guilty of sexually abusing Sheldon Kennedy, who also later played in the NHL. He only served about 18 months and was then pardoned by the National Parole Board in 2007.
