PM Harper declares his vote against the decisive yet controversial debate on abortion laws triggered by Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth. Woodworth suggests its time the Parliament decided the definition of a human being.

During a one-hour debate of his motion, Woodworth said the existing legal definition of a human being is “dishonest.”

“Here’s what our 400-year-old definition of a human being says: a child becomes a human being when it has completely proceeded in a living state from the body of its mother,” said Woodworth. “How many Canadians believe that?”

Woodworth demands the formation of a special committee which can look into the matter and decide when exactly human life begins. According to Government Whip Gordon O’Connor, the motion’s “intention is to restrict abortion in Canada,” and the “government will not reopen the debate.”

On the other hand, a number of Liberal and NDP MPs believe Woodworth is on a mission to criminalize abortion. Hence, PM Harper insists is not in the favor of reopening the debate.

“Every private member can table bills and motions in this House,” Harper responded. “Party leaders don’t have any control over that. This motion was deemed votable by an all-party committee of the house. I think that’s unfortunate. In my case I will be voting against the motion.”
