After pleading guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit honest services fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit bribery, former New York State Sen. Carl Kruger was sentenced seven years in prison on Thursday. He made a public apology before the court announced its verdict.

“I am broken, destroyed and disgraced,” Kruger said. “I have no one else to blame. This will haunt me for the rest of my life.”

Reportedly, Kruger accepted over $1 million in bribes and in return gave multiple favors to the payers. Prosecutors insisted on sending Kruger, 62, to prison for at least 12 years.

“We have only look at other countries to see that once corruption takes hold, democracy itself becomes a charade, justice becomes a mere slogan camouflaging a cesspool of self-interests,” U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff said.

Michael Turano, a Manhattan-based gynecologist, also pleaded guilty and received two years in prison. Turano was Kruger’s partner in crime and helped him give favors to bribe payers.

“The moral is that when elected officials violate their oaths of office and betray their constituents by putting personal interests and enrichment above their duty as public servants, they will be brought to justice,” said Preet Bharara, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, in a statement.
