After increasing the charges for room and board, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews says he is not going to provide porn to the prisoners of Canada. Toews tweeted that he has cut the cable channels that gave access to porn to a few prisoners in Nova Scotia.

He tweeted: “I recently discovered that some inmates had access to porn in prison on their TV’s. I have put an end to this unacceptable practice.”

Without naming the channels, Toews’ office said they learned that a number of prisoners at the Springhill Institution in Nova Scotia were watching porn on their TV. Since porn is illegal in prisons, the connection to the providers was disconnected.

On Wednesday, Toews announced new set of laws for the prisoners of Canada, including, raising the charges for room and board, decreasing incentives and putting fee on services like prison telephone system.

“All too often, victims have told us they feel the criminals have all the rights. We’ve listened. And since taking office our Government has been working hard to restore balance to our criminal justice system,” Toews said.

After December 2012, inmates earning between $52.50 and $69 biweekly will contribute around 30% of their income towards room and board and pay between $1.58 and $2.08 per day for accommodation, food and utilities.

On the other hand, the opposition insists these renewed set of rules will only put off prisoners instead of serving the main purpose of rehabilitation.

Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae said: “Eventually, people leave prison. What do you want them to leave with? No skills, no ability, no desire to make a better world for themselves?”
