With Canada’s population aging, Canadian families are changing as seniors move in with their adult children. When a home becomes a two- or three-generation household, how do the family dynamics change? How are relationships and identities redefined? TVO navigates the emotional territory of a growing trend in the new feature-length documentary Mom’s Home, from award-winning filmmaker Maureen Judge.

Airing just in time for Mother’s Day, Mom’s Home makes its world premiere on TVO’s point-of-view Canadian documentary strand, The View From Here, Wednesday May 5 at 10 pm ET (repeated Sunday May 9 at 10:30 pm ET).

Mom’s Home follows the separate stories of three aging mothers and their grown daughters. Each mother and daughter have been brought together under one roof by reasons such as a father/husband’s death, degenerative illness, loneliness, isolation, financial circumstances or cultural tradition.

Gloria is caring for her widowed mother May, who is coping with the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Charmaine has opened her home to mom Harrian: Harrian had previously lived with her son for 15 years, but for the sake of his own family, he felt it best that Harrian move on… and out. Pam moved in with her daughter Liz to help out with the finances but, after 11 years of cohabitation, yearns for her own freedom.

All the women find themselves in an emotional tug-of-war as they grapple with conflicting emotions, changing expectations, social adjustments and a sometimes ill-fated commitment to do what’s best. Intimate and insightful, Mom’s Home entertains with all-too recognizable family dramas brought on by role reversal, and prompts viewers to confront their own fears about aging.

Mom’s Home completes Maureen Judge’s vérité trilogy exploring love, betrayal and acceptance in parent/adult-child relationships. Her two earlier documentaries on these themes, Unveiled: The Mother Daughter Relationship and In My Parents’ Basement, also premiered on TVO.
