March of CLASSE on SundayAfter achieving its long-sought goal of cutting the hike in the tuition fees of the universities in Quebec, the student organization called CLASSE – The Coalition large de l'Association pour une solidarité syndicale étudiante – has now set its new goal to promote the notion of free education.

The new Parti Quebecois government took back its notorious proposal this week of an increment in post-secondary tuition fees. This has once again made Quebec the province with the lowest tuition in the country. Now CLASSE, a group promoting views of more than 100,000 Quebec students, has started to raise their voice for free education. It has kept a stance which implies that free education is fully attainable. Its first step towards the new goal was arrangement of a march of several hundred people on Saturday.

Jeremie Bedard-Wien, spokesperson of CLASSE, stated that "Our struggle for accessibility to higher education is not yet over.” He also added that, CLASSE aims for an "education that is free — not only from tuition fees — but also from corporate influence."

Unlike the previous goal of denouncing the increment in fees, the new agenda of CLASSE for getting free education in the province is not shared by the two other major student organizations of the province. CLASSE has a very clear vision that it will strive to make education completely accessible which is only possible by making education entirely free.

So far the PQ government has only promised to call a symposium on the issue.

Statistics Canada lists that tuition fees have been increased in almost every province of Canada except for Newfoundland and Labrador, and now this list also includes Quebec.
