The federal government made an announcement on Wednesday pronouncing it illegal to possess traffic, import or export MDPV, the drug commonly found in “bath salts.” MDPV has now been incorporated in the list of Controlled Drugs and Substances Act along with other drugs like heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine. The official news release stated that “this means all activities involving this substance are illegal, except for research and scientific activities, which must be authorized by regulation.”

To clear any ambiguity, MDPV is not the bath salt actually supplemented to baths and easily purchasable at any drugstores and retailers. In fact, Health Canada clarified that “’Bath Salts’ are powerful drugs that look like regular bath salts, but are used for the purpose of causing mind-altering effects.” MDPV, short for methylenedioxypyrovalerone, is a synthetic amphetamine which can be a source of a powerful high. It is infamous being a source to unsafe side effects, including atrocious hallucinations, fear and even paranoia. “Bath salt” is just a nickname of the drug as its finished product looks like the scented epsom bath salts.

Following the announcement on Wednesday, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police commented on the ban saying it was “an important step in stopping organized criminal groups from acquiring and profiting from this illegal substance.” But health professionals claim that even with such bans, there are innumerous other varieties of the drug which lawmakers are paying attention to.  The director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Dr. Nora Volkow, once stated in July that “the moment you start to regulate one of them, they’ll come out with a variant that sometimes is even more potent.”
