The Toronto Transit Commission did not only accepted the five cent fare hike “in principle” on Thursday’s meeting but it also voted to contract out several cleaning jobs to achieve its targeted budget with the shortfall of $30 million.

Members of Local 113 rallied out of the City Hall in protest chanting “where’s the respect.” The voting which took place at the meeting was merely a win since there was a 4-3 majority for endangering roughly 150 cleaning jobs. The meeting was addressed stating that an approximate of $4.3 million would be saved by this step.

In response to this progress, the union president, Bob Kinnear declared openly that “we may have lost the battle but we sure as hell won’t lose the war.” Kinnear mentioned that “conceivably, some of our operators may not notice that the fare box has been short changed.” He warned that “there are all sorts of things that we can do.” In defense to their actions, Chair of TTC, Karen Stintz, explained during the meeting that “we’re all being asked to do business a little differently.” She further added that “We’ve all got to figure out how we’re going to do it, because this is not the end.”

By now TTC has already contracted out the tasks of garbage collection and cleaning of the subway stations, which previously concluded in a total of 30 per cent savings on the jobs. Stintz further justified the proceedings by announcing that only the present vacancies will be outsourced and the all those employed at the moment will get to keep their jobs, regardless if the commission votes to contract out their work or not.
