A new report published on Monday by the Institute of Marriage and Family Canada, criticized the standing point of Alberta’s new anti-bullying legislation, asserting that it allegedly places too much burden on children alone, while overseeing the responsibilities and duties of parents and educators in the societal problem.

The report takes on numerous anti-bullying legislation and initiatives taken all over North America, including Alberta’s new Education Act. That new act implemented in Alberta’s legislature restricts children to report their peers for bulling otherwise they are threatened of punishments like suspension. The act states that students are required to “refrain from, report and not tolerate bullying or bullying behaviors directed toward others in the school,” inconsiderate of whether the bullying takes place in school, during school hours or via electonic media.

The bold and decisive legislature of Alberta has faced split reviews from the observers. Many have applauded the act, which claim Alberta has taken a model initiative which others shall follow. But some, including the report published on Monday by IMFC, assert that their cure to the problem is inadequate and there shall be a better code of conduct. They assert that this approach has completely forsaken the duties of adults, especially when it comes to online bullying.

The report, published by the IMFC and written by the researcher Peter Jon Mitchell, reads that “In effect, students would have to police the Internet on behalf of the school or face the threat of suspension.” It states that “this is not an effective way to engage students regarding cyberbullying.”
