The Hamilton Police Service is alerting the public to a Fraud scam targeting victims in Hamilton in the last month.
Hamilton Police are currently investigating complaints where victims have met persons vi a online dating websites. Suspects target their victims by creating fake profiles on legitimate Internet dating sites. An online relationship begins where the suspect will express strong emotions for the victim in a short period of time. Under the guise of love and romance they convince the victims to send them large amounts of money. The money is alleged to be needed for travel or medical expenses, government dues, business investments or administrative fees. In most cases they promise to pay the funds back. Once the money is wired, the suspect will ask for more.
In cases where the victim cannot send money, the suspect will send fraudulent cheques and ask the victim to deposit the cheque and wire funds back to them. The cheque is later returned to the bank as a counterfeit item and the victim is held responsible for the amount of the cheque.
Financial Institutions are aware of these scams and are working with the Hamilton Police Service in their efforts to dissuade victims from sending money overseas and protecting them from financial loss.
Be aware of these dating and romance fraudsters. Try to remove your emotions from your decision making. Avoid wiring large sums of money using money transfer agencies or bank wire transfers to someone you have never met in person and do not know and trust. Never give out your credit card or on-line account information in an email or when chatting online.
