The headlining inquiry into the Quebec’s corrupt construction industry by Charbonneau Commission returned hearing testimony’s this week to rectify ambiguity of a very important testimony given by a star witness. Previously, the commission has heard different Quebec construction company owners and municipal bureaucrats confessing that they exchanged bribes.

A former Union Montreal party worker, Martin Dumont, returned to the stand this week for clarifying his original testimony recorded in the fall. Dumont confessed having made a serious mistake, or lying, while narrating the key testimony about the party of mortified former mayor Gerald Tremblay. Dumont’s original testimony was ground breaking, as he swore witness that ex-mayor was present at the time when political organizers conversed about vague finances, while also adding that a receptionist had informed him at the time, that she is asked to count $850,000 cash.

This Monday, the commission heard testimony of that former receptionist, Alexandra Pion, who denied having talked to Dumont at all. Pion alleged that “I never mentioned this incident to Martin Dumont.” She also confirmed that she never told Dumont that the cash was $850,000, while agreeing that Trepanier did have a safe in his office. When Dumont returned to the stand today, Justice France Charbonneau asked “my question is simple. Was that event true or false? Yes or no?” and he admitted saying “did I mix up the two stories? It’s very possible.” Dumont also confessed that “I should not have misled the commission.” At a previous unrelated occasion Justice Charbonneau has reportedly alleged that “If the commission learns that someone lied, we’ll take action without hesitation.”
