The jury of the media-highlighted coroner’s inquest into the death of troubled teen, Ashley Smith, witnessed an upsetting video on Monday showing the final moments of Smith in her cell at a southern Ontario correctional facility. The video provided evidence of the incidents incurred leading to the death of deceased.

The video reveal s that the two guards stationed outside the cell of 19-year-old Smith stood idle and witnessed the happenings as she choked to death by winding a piece of cloth around her neck and ended up lying face down on the floor of her cell at the Grand Valley Institute for Women in Kitchener in October 2007. The video recording begins at 6:45 a.m., showing the guards debating among themselves for 10 minutes as Smith tightens a ligature around her neck. The guards also mention that they have been ordered not to intervene unless she stops breathing. Meanwhile, the video shows Smith being stuck between the bed and the wall while on the floor, face down, gasping for breath but not speaking. Lastly, the video shows that after almost 10 minutes of suffering, the guards ultimately enter her cell and shook the cloth from around her neck.

Almost few minutes the guards realize that Smith has not moved an inch, after which they reenter the cell and attempt to provoke her by slapping on her back. The guards begin performing perform CPR as they called a nurse and an ambulance, which reached around 7:10 a.m. Emergency workers worked on Smith for another 30 minutes, after which she is shifted from prison to the hospital.
