President of the U.S., Barack Obama, is highly anticipated to officially authorize spending cuts of almost $85 billion on Friday, which has formed as an overwhelming concern for Canadian officials who fear that this can end up in an instant increase in border delays, which will consequently result in trade losses for both countries. Even though the alleged budget cuts are predicted to be implemented progressively in the period of at least few months, it is widely guessed that border services of the U.S. will be one of the first departments being affected, which will result in an eminent customs staff reduction as early as this weekend.

The Federal Finance Minister of Canada, Jim Flaherty, informed sources on Friday that he is highly troubled to even hypothesize the result of the cuts on Canada’s exporters who are use to sending their goods across the U.S. border daily.  He mentioned that “it concerns me a great deal to hear some of the speculation about border delays because we have the largest trading [partnership] in the world.” Flaherty added that “If there is a consequence in terms of trade we’ll have to work hard with them and in cooperation with them to make sure that the consequences are minimized.”

The U.S. Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano, cautioned last week that in case lawmakers are unsuccessful in preventing the implementation of budget cuts, the influx of trade goods and travel will indeed be slowed. Napolitano stated that “it will accrue over the next few weeks,” and so “lines, procedures, wait times are all going to get longer.”
