The City pleaded guilty to contravening sections 263(1) and 260(2)(a) of the regulations for failure to ensure workers were protected from cave-ins of sliding material in a trench. The municipality was fined $7,500 plus a $3,000 victim fine surcharge.
An additional charge against the city was stayed in court.
The charges arose after an Occupational Health Officer conducted a routine inspection of a worksite in Saskatoon in early September, 2008.
This marks the 12th conviction for violations of Saskatchewan’s Occupational Health and Safety legislation in 2010-11, compared with a total of 11 in the previous year.
OHS conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.
