In light of an extraordinary number of politically-charged investigations at its hands, Elections Canada has decided to hire almost six new investigators to explore alleged violations of elections law. The agency has publicized an open tender for a standing offer list, so that investigators could be asked to report for work at Elections Canada when required.

The standing offer lists in details all the duties to be carried out by investigators working for the Commissioner of Canada Elections, including interviewing witnesses, obtaining search warrants and production orders, and working with federal prosecutors to bring charges, where necessary. It was particularly mentioned that applicants shall have a post-secondary degree or diploma in law enforcement, along with experience of investigating commercial or economic crime and assisting bringing cases to trial. Four, out of the total six, investigators shall at least speak bilingually to qualify for the standing offer, whereas the remaining could work in English only. Applicants are also compelled to attest openly that they will not engaged in “politically partisan activities at the federal, provincial or territorial level.” Complete details of the standing offer were published this week on the government contracting website, MERX.

Election Canada is currently overlooking the misleading robocalls allegations in Guelph in the 2011 election, along with a broader investigation of live and pre-recorded calls in more than 200 other ridings. At the same time, it has also tapped in investigations of the spending by Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro’s 2008 campaign in Peterborough and donations made to the same campaign by employees of a Mississauga electrical company owned by Del Mastro’s cousin.
