The Conservative government has been widely accused of having intentions to evade a reckoning on the science of climate change by making Canada the only country to duck out of United Nations convention that fights the spread of droughts.  However, responding to the accusations and clearing his name, Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, came clean on Thursday and alleged that Canada is only withdrawing from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification because the program has become too bureaucratic.

Harper alleged that even less than one-fifth of the total $350,000 that Canada contributes to the convention is usually spent on programming, whereas Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, John Baird, even branded the whole convention a “talkfest” that does a disservice to Canadian taxpayers. During a questions period with reporters, Harper mentioned that “eighteen per cent of the funds that we send it are actually spent on programming,” and that “the rest goes to various bureaucratic measures … It’s not an effective way to spend taxpayers’ money.”

The announcement of Canada’s withdrawal has now made it the only country in the world to have sided with the agreement, which was ratified in 1995. Numerous sources are defaming Conservative government as being ignorant to climate change policy in past international meetings. The head of the Council of Canadians and an author of a forthcoming book on global droughts, Maude Barlow, stated that “anything that they’re involved in that can lead to more evidence that we’re a planet in crisis environmentally, they don’t want to be part of.” He added that “they simply do not want this information coming forward.”
