Former South African President Nelson Mandela is reportedly responding positively to treatment after being re-admitted to a hospital for a prevailing lung infection.
“The doctors advise that former President Nelson Mandela is responding positively to the treatment he is undergoing for a recurring lung infection,” President Jacob Zuma’s office said in a brief statement.
Nelson Mandela, 94, is receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed medical facility where he was readmitted before midnight on Wednesday for the third time in four months. Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj showed his gratitude to the media and general public for their cooperation in respecting Mandela’s privacy.
“Of course I have been saying to people, you should bear in mind Madiba is no longer that young and if he goes for check-ups every now and again, I don’t think people must be alarmed about it… I would like to really say the country must not panic,” Zuma told the media on Thursday.
Nobel Prize winner Mandela has been suffering through lung problems ever since he was a political prisoner on Robben Island where he contracted tuberculosis. Mandela served as South Africa’s first black president from 1994 to 1999 and is widely regarded as the father of the nation.
US President Obama also sent Mandela his best wishes.
“When you think of a single individual that embodies the kind of leadership qualities that I think we all aspire to, the first name that comes up is Nelson Mandela. And so we wish him all the very best,” he said.
