Ontario’s Ministry of Labour made an official announcement on Monday, disclosing that a professional engineer, Robert Wood, has been charged in accordance to the health and safety laws relating to the last summer’s deadly mall collapse in a northern Ontario town. The ministry alleged that Wood is alleged to have endangered a worker by providing “negligent advice.”

A representative of The Ministry of Labour, Tom Zach, informed The Canadian Press that the engineer has been found guilty of professional misconduct in 2010. It was explained that Wood and colleague Gregory Saunders of M.R. Wright and Associates based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., had examined the mall in Elliot Lake, Ont., as recently as April, 2012. Whereas, a month later, i.e. only a month before the collapsed, they informed authorities that the mall was structurally secure even though they observed rust on beams. Eventually the roof-deck garage of the Algo Centre Mall fell to the floor last June, resulting in the death of two women and injuries to several others.

The ministry mentioned that another charge laid against the engineer relates to working in a manner “that may endanger a worker.” It was found out that the maximum penalties on conviction of these charges can result in a fine of up to $25,000 and/or up to 12 months imprisonment. Wood is anticipated to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on May 15. Representing the citizens of the town, Doug Elliott, alleged on Monday that “I know the Ministry of Labour was investigating everyone involved,” and “some of the engineers were concerned they could be charged.”
