Vancouver Police are reminding everyone to be cautious when receiving unsolicited phone calls after its Financial Crime Unit received information that a group of scammers may be actively soliciting business.

It is believed that the group is part of a boiler room operation and uses various stories and the names of legitimate businesses, including Microsoft, Visa or one of the local banks. Ultimately, the victim either pays for a service that was fictitious to begin with or ends up getting their credit data or identity stolen.

Police are trying to get ahead of the scam and prevent anyone from falling victim to this type of telemarketing scam.

Tips

– if you receive an unsolicited call from someone purporting to be from your bank or credit card company, obtain a call-back number and confirm that number through a public database

– if you receive an unsolicited call about your computer having problems, do not allow the caller to direct you to a website or have remote access to your computer; the scammers can plant a virus or Malicious software that could capture sensitive data, such as online banking user names and passwords and then charge you to remove this software

– if you get a call from someone you don’t know asking for personal information – like your credit card or Social Insurance Number – it’s likely a scam – HANG UP!

– remember, you can’t win a contest you did not enter

– if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is

If you receive an unsolicited phone call from someone asking for personal information, you can report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
