A family friend of the 18-year-old Sammy Yatim revealed that his family does not holds the entire police force responsible for fatally shooting Yatim police on the weekend, alleging that they do not blame the entire police service for a situation that should have been handled differently. Joseph Nazar alleged that we hope police officers will receive “better training” in the future so they are able to handle comparable circumstances differently in the wake of the young man’s death.

Speaking outside Yatim’s family home on Tuesday, Nazar mentioned that “if one (officer) makes a mistake we’re not going to blame the whole police force for one police officer.” It is well established now that Yatim only had a knife at the time he faced several police officers on a streetcar on early Saturday morning, which is a situation his family understands the officers could have avoided using lethal force in. Nazar alleged that “(Yatim) was alone on the streetcar. This should be handled differently.” These comments were made by Nazar at a time when Yatim’s family is planning a funeral service, expected to take place on Thursday morning.

Nazar shared that at the time when Yatim was shot, his was father was attending a business trip in the U.S., while his mother was in Montreal, and hence his teenage sister was asked to identify the body. Along with the family arranging a funeral soon, organizers are also coordinating to campaign for a second protest following a demonstration that drew hundreds of people Monday night.
