An online sting operation conducted by Netherlands-based child-rights organization, Terre des Hommes, which lured and identified more than a 1,000 online virtual sex predators through a virtual 10-year-old Filipino girl, includes a number of Canadians. The organization used an avatar named “Sweetie,” which was soon invited by more than 20,000 chat room users offering to pay for webcam sex performances, i.e. a form of child exploitation the group says is “largely unknown but quickly spreading.”

Terre des Hommes pointed out that this form most commonly involves men from rich countries approaching children from poor and developing countries. A researcher commented on the YouTube video explaining the operation that “we have men who are going online, finding these girls, virtually raping them and then turn off their computer and then go to work as if nothing happened.” Consequently, researchers acquired information of the relevant users who made dubious contact with the online profile and handed the data and video footage over to Interpol on Monday.

While doing that, its spokesperson Hans Guyt mentioned in a statement that “the biggest problem is that the police don’t take action until child victims file reports, but children almost never report these crimes. These children are usually forced to do this by adults or by extreme poverty.” The group has filed a petition on Avaaz.org to steer the governments into making more proactive laws that will oversee investigations of webcam child sex tourism, which Terre des Hommes says is “as devastating” to the victims as direct sexual abuse.
