Superior Court Justice Ian Nordheimer, i.e. the same judge who released a lengthy document detailing a Toronto Police investigation into Mayor Rob Ford, has ordered several blacked-out sections of the investigations to be revealed publically “later this afternoon.” Previously, many pages of the almost 500 page Information to Obtain a Search Warrant document seeking for permission to search the home of Mayor Ford’s friend and occasional driver, Alexander Lisi, were redacted when the report was first released on Oct. 31, in order to protect the names of innocent parties and secret police information.

However, in the latest ruling announced on Wednesday morning, Justice Nordheimer alleged that multiple sections of the report should be made public, including those which explain late night meetings between Mr. Ford and Mr. Lisi at gas stations and school parking lots. He wrote in his decision that “there is no serious risk posed to the administration of justice arising from giving public access to this material.” It was added that “further, the negative impact on the public’s right to know and the impact on the Charter protected right of expression would greatly exceed any beneficial effects of maintaining the sealed order. There is, consequently, no proper foundation of continuing the sealing order as it relates to that material.”

However, the judgment did impose three different exceptions for the material to be made public, namely that people’s personal identities remain blacked out, that details involving Mayor Ford’s wife Renata remain concealed, and that specific parts identified by Mr. Lisi’s defence lawyer that may risk his client’s right to a fair trial be kept from public view.
