Canada Reveals Distribution of $20-Million in Aid to Philippines

Canada has finally revealed the structure of how its financial aid will reach the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, as it has already announced a total of $20-million in government. Revealing the details of recipients in Ottawa on Tuesday, Minister of International Development, Christian Paradis, mentioned that this money will be shared among 12 international and domestic groups.

It was explained that overall a sum of $12-million will be distributed among international aid groups, majority of will be directed to the United Nations, whereas the remaining $8-million is planned to be shared among Canadian aid groups. Mr. Paradis stated that “Canada is working relentlessly to try and lessen the suffering of people who’ve been affected by the huge typhoon that affected the Philippines.” It was added that “… Our support will be needed for quite some time.”

It was explained that The UN’s World Food Program will receive $4-million, while its children’s fund, UNICEF, will receive $3-million. On the other hand, The Red Cross and the International Organization for Migration are each going to receive $2-million, along with The World Health Organization getting $800,000, and the UN’s Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs $200,000. Contrarily, the domestic group World Vision Canada is planned to receive $2-million, while each among Oxfam Canada and Plan Canada are to receive $1.5-million each. In addition to that Médecins sans frontières (Doctors Without Borders), CARE Canada and Save the Children Canada were also announced to receive $1-million each.
