Recently released court documents allege that Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s former chief of staff, Nigel Wright, is the subject of an active and comprehensive RCMP investigation that suspects him of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. Additionally, the document added that the investigation also includes Senator Mike Duffy and the Prime Minister’s Office.

The court documents authored by RCMP Cpl., Greg Horton, poised that there is reasonable ground to believe that Nigel Wright offered money or favour to Mike Duffy that conflicts with the Criminal Code. Horton stated that Duffy accepted the offer of money, further supporting the speculations that both Wright and Duffy “have committed Bribery, Frauds on the Government, and Breach of Trust.” The documents cited reference extracts from several email conversations which imply that numerous senior officials in the Prime Minister’s Office were also involved in the negotiations. Horton pointed out that alleged negotiations also involved Duffy’s then lawyer, Janice Payne, and PMO legal counsel, Benjamin Perrin. Additionally, Horton revealed that he believes Senator Irving Gerstein, in charge of the Conservative Party’s finances, was considering paying off Duffy’s repayment to the Senate, at the time he thought it was $32,000, but later “agreed to reimbursement of the legal fees” when he learnt that Duffy instead has to repay more than $90,000.

Court records confirm that Duffy, along with three other senators including Patrick Brazeau and Pamela Wallin, is being actively investigated by the RCMP for their housing or travel claims. Majority of these suspects were suspended from the Senate without pay earlier this month.
