A winter storm aiming for northeast has cancelled more than a thousand flights on the first working day of the New Year. The winter storm is also expected to bring more than a foot of snow to New England and fierce blizzard conditions to Long Island. The massive winter storm has brought frigid temperatures and strong winds accompanied by heavy snow.

Snow started burying New York and New England on Wednesday night but the real brunt of the storm didn’t hit the areas until later this Thursday. The National Weather Service has warned and put the entire New York city under a storm watch from this Thursday and Friday. Significant amount of snow accumulation can lead to travel problems. ‘We are looking at a serious storm situation,’ said Governor Andrew Cuomo further urging people to leave their cars at home in case the highways are closed for evening rush hours on Thursday.

‘In the I-95 corridor, the daylight hours are not going to be all that bad,” said Carl Erickson, a senior meteorologist belonging to the State College of Pennsylvania. “The core of the storm from Boston down to New York City and Philadelphia will be Thursday night into Friday morning.’ The storm has already buried parts of Michigan in about a foot of snow and Illinois in six inches of snow. The storm is also expected to stretch towards the south and shower Washington with approximately an inch of snow.
