The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is investigating a case of a young woman’s death, which also led to a man taken in custody. Authorities are in the preliminary stages of examining the “suspicious” New Year’s Day casualty which is suspected to become Surrey’s first homicide of 2014.

A spokesperson for IHIT, Sgt. Adam MacIntosh, mentioned that the 19-year-old woman fell from at least 26 floors high apartment in the 13000 block of 100th Avenue at about 1 a.m. on Wednesday, and passed away immediately. The officials have arrested a 23-year-old man, who was allegedly in a domestic relationship with the victim, however no charged had been laid so far. In a statement issued by MacIntosh, he mentioned that “our goal right now is to try and determine from him what were the circumstances that led to her falling to her death and if the circumstances were criminal in nature.”

Sgt. MacIntosh explained that police were initially called to the scene in response to a possible domestic disturbance, though one of two RCMP officers in the area happened to pass by the same area on an unrelated matter and turned toward the building in response to a noise they heard and saw what appeared to be someone falling from the building. Despite the victim being an African-Canadian woman, no further identification details have been released so far. MacIntosh claims that the 23-year-old suspect has a criminal record made up of relatively minor offences, while the Mounties have also been called to the residence previously for other domestic disturbance calls.
