In a recently issued warning, Environment Canada has upgraded its weather alert for Nova Scotia from a winter storm watch to a blizzard warning. According to the agency, snow and blowing snow are anticipated to erupt on Jan. 2, along with a forecast in sight for blizzard conditions on Friday with near-zero visibility. The agency has predicted that a low-pressure system will reach Nova Scotia on Jan. 2, and will track south of province over the next day as it intensifies.

Moreover, the agency claims the system will bring snow and blowing snow to southwestern Nova Scotia, spreading eastward. It is speculated that the snowfall expected due to this system is likely to be between 15 and 30 cm for most of Nova Scotia. Whereas the worst of these conditions will likely be witnessed in southwest Nova Scotia and the Atlantic coast, since these areas are anticipated to receive higher snowfall amounts with stronger winds. In addition to that, snow and blowing snow will probably be an issue for all of Nova Scotia with blizzard conditions expected for some areas.

The agency elucidated that a cold airmass is expected to drop temperatures further below this morning, which is expected to reach minus 25 for northern Nova Scotia. Whereas, these frigid temperatures coupled with light to brisk northwesterly winds are speculated to produce extreme wind chill values near minus 35. Furthermore, the high tidal cycle and strong winds, higher than normal water levels are possible for Yarmouth and Shelburne will continue on Jan. 3.
