Mayor Hazel McCallion is receiving praising remarks and admiration from many for being able to unanimously unite all GTA mayors and get them all to agree on something. The 92-year-old legend mentioned in a meeting held at the Mississauga Living Arts Centre on Friday that “it’s a historic day,” which saw unanimous agreement to collectively approach the province for help for ice storm bills.
In addition to all mayors of the Greater Toronto Area, the gathering also including two mayors from Toronto, namely Toronto’s Mayor Rob Ford and the one anointed by council and Toronto’s Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly. Acknowledging cooperation received from both mayors, it was highlighted that “Toronto has never been that co-operative in working with the GTA mayors.” It was also recognized that “Barbara Hall was very co-operative, Mel Lastman came very seldom and David Miller never came.”
In addition to that, Hazel mentioned that “the biggest issue in the GTA is gridlock” and so “I hope we can get this kind of co-operation to tackle that.” Apart from the primary agenda of the meeting, she also discussed traffic, transit and rush hour, as she highlighted that “this is what we need to work on now in the future.” Acknowledging her efforts in Friday’s meeting, she boasted that “I think its interesting that I came in with a train derailment and I am going out on an ice storm.” Additionally, she alleged that it turns out a Hurricane can leave a positive legacy.
