A 17 year boy has died as the result of injuries he sustained after being struck by a flat deck pick up while long boarding on Macmillian Rd, directly in front of Cedar Secondary School.

The youth was long boarding in the south bound lane when struck by a north bound flat deck driven by a 28 year old male. The youth was attended to at scene by BC Ambulance Service Paramedics and volunteers with the North Cedar Volunteer Fired Department. He was then transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital(NRGH) where he was pronounced dead.

Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Unit officers and a Traffic Collision Re-constructionist with ICARS (Integrated Collision Analyst Re-constructionist Services) continue to investigate. The BC Coroners Service was advised and attended.

The investigation is only in the preliminary stages, however, alcohol and speed are not considered to be contributing factors. The area is dimly lit and the youth was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing, said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

The driver is co-operating with police and remained at the scene until police arrived. Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services are offering support to the family of the deceased. The immediate family of the deceased have been notified, however, the name of the youth is not being released at this time.
