Tory Justice Minister, Jonathan Denis, has urged former premier and Calgary-Elbow MLA, Alison Redford, to return to her job as an MLA unless there’s a reason she can’t. Redford has been absent in the legislature since her resignation in March. Her office notified Speaker Gene Zwozdesky’s office that Redford would be absent under rules that exempt MLAs from being docked pay if they can’t attend due to illness or injury, bereavement or official business, however it was not specified what was the case.

In his remarks during an event in Calgary on Friday, Denis stated that “I don’t know the specific situation, but I think she should show up for work if she’s able.” However, having said that, Denis alleged that he does not like that the pictures of Redford’s daughter are being circulated on social media and by media outlets. In addition to Denis, Jobs Minister Thomas Lukaszuk has previously advised Redford to return to the provincial legislature to fulfil her duties as the MLA for Calgary-Elbow.

Meanwhile, the Progressive Conservative government is gradually distancing itself from Redford as Premier Dave Hancock recently apologized for the government losing touch with Albertans. Commenting on that, Denis alleged that it’s proper for the government to say sorry because “Albertans expect a clear apology.” He highlighted former Premier Ralph Klein’s reputation for being forthcoming about his and the government’s mistakes. It was added that “I’ve always felt Albertans expect us to run our operations much like a small business, like a household, and that hasn’t happened in the past few months.”
