Steeves Formally Registers to Run for Winnipeg Mayor

Former city councilor, Gord Steeves, has formally filed his papers to run for the mayor of Winnipeg. Steeves entered the clerk’s office at city hall awith a couple dozen supporters on Friday morning and registered to run for mayor of Winnipeg in the October election. Addressing the media on his way back, Steeves shared his intentions to improve relationships with other levels of government if he gets elected, and vowed to bring trust back at city hall for citizens.

Steeves mentioned that “in some cases, regrettably, I feel they don’t really trust it, and that breaks my heart.” According to Steeves, he does not plans to raise taxes to pay for priorities like crumbling infrastructure and instead promised to find other ways to raise revenue. He alleged that “the citizens of the City of Winnipeg give this city $1 billion each year. That ought to be enough.” Steeves highlighted that city hall needs to better prioritize where taxpayer money goes. He elucidated that “what happened was a dynamic of ribbon-cutting politics where millions, tens of hundreds of millions, was being spent on projects based on elections.”

On the other hand, current Mayor Sam Katz is fighting cost overruns with the new police headquarters and fire stations. Katz has alleged to make up his mind about his future in the summer. In response to Steeves’ comments, Katz alleged that “I’m going to suggest that there may be the opportunity to, during a debate for mayor, we’ll have to have those discussions.”
