The national chief of Canada’s largest aboriginal group, Shawn Atleo, has announced to have resigned from his position due to internal discord among the group over support of a federal bill to overhaul education for First Nations children. The surprise announcement made by Atleo came on Friday, i.e. few days after aboriginal chiefs from five provinces strongly criticized the government’s education bill, C-33.
According to the dissented chiefs, the bill failed to provide sufficient funds for schools on reserves, did not possess ample support since they were not consulted, and gave the federal government control of the system. The piercing attacks resulted in a reaction from Atleo, who believed the bill represented a strong step forward for First Nations children. According to many, Atleo’s failure to convince some chiefs resulted in trouble for his continuing leadership at the Assembly of First Nations (AFN).
While making the announcement, Atleo said he didn’t want to be a “lightning rod” in the debate and hence deduced it was best for him to step down. His resignation has left the group uncertain about who would succeed him. Atleo issued a “call to action” for aboriginal chiefs and the entire country on issues such as better First Nations education. In addition to that, Atleo alleged that “I have fought for this work and to achieve this mandate. This work is too important and I am not prepared to be an obstacle to it or a lightning rod distracting from the kids and their potential.”
