NDP Leader Andrea Horwath has repeatedly expressed her antipathy for those public sector CEOs who expense items like muffins to the taxpayers, however recent Freedom of Information documents obtained by the Ontario Liberals show that the she has done the same herself. According to the documents, Horwath and her assistant charged taxpayers for muffins, bagels, Tim Hortons lunch combos and even a 25-cent Oshawa parking tab.

The documents revealed that Horwath and her two assistants made an overall more than 100 food claims when they travelled the province from January 2011 to December 2013. Horwath has reiterated numerous times during her entire election campaign that while average families are struggling to make ends meet, they can’t afford to pay more in taxes, hydro bills, tolls and fees. When saying that, she has often blamed public sector fat cats who expensed small items like a muffin while collecting six-figure salaries. She primarily targeted the heads of major public agencies and called for a hard cap on their salaries after revelations that well paid CEOs and consultants often make taxpayers pay for a tea or coffee, which is something most regular folks pay out of their own pockets.

According to an report published last September, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said that “we’ve seen the same kind of scandals with eHealth, the exact same kind of scandal with the Ornge air ambulance, where these folks at the very top are expensing not only things like coffee and tea and muffins, but trips all over the world.”
