OPP has gotten its hands dirty in the provincial election campaign by airing two new attack ads on Monday. Many were not so concerned about the content of the ad but the fact that the OPP paid for such ads was inexplicable. The Ontario Provincial Police Association allegedly funded two unambiguous attack ads that target Tim Hudak.

This is perhaps first time that the OPPA have entangled themselves in the political fray with any kind of advertising. One of the ad says “we’re here to keep you safe,” showing a uniformed officer pushing an apparent lawbreaker into a cruiser. While, the voice peculiarly asks “we’re the OPP and we’re here for you. Who’s Tim Hudak here for?” Mr. Hudak has so far promised to implement a two-year pay freeze across the broader public sector, if elected. There have been numerous reports and complaints that have criticized the role the police association has played by getting politically involved in this way.

Meanwhile, there are currently two ongoing OPP investigations that involve Queen’s Park, including the Ornge air ambulance boondoggle and the deleted e-mails scandal. The latter of which includes senior members of former premier Dalton McGuinty’s staff, who are accused of having had deleted their hard drives in a supposed attempt to cover up the gas plant scandal. The Liberal government has bestowed hefty pay hikes to the OPP. Most recently, it received an 8.55% pay hike in Jan. 1 as part of the government’s commitment to make them the highest paid force in the province.
