In light of speculations that the RCMP is going to lay charges against the suspended senator Mike Duffy, his lawyer alleged that Duffy is an innocent man looking forward to a “fair” hearing in court. Several sources have confirmed that the RCMP is anticipated to lay criminal charges against Duffy at a news conference scheduled on Thursday at 11 a.m.

The Mounties are anticipated to lay charges against Duffy in connections to allegations that he inappropriately claimed living and travel expenses for which he was reimbursed out of public funds. Additionally, Duffy might also be facing further charges in connection to a separate alleged misuse of public funds. According to an RCMP investigator, Duffy made an extremely suspicious payment of about $65, in October to a former CTV pal under a contract the man said he did “little or no work” for.

Duffy’s lawyer, Donald Bayne, confirmed in a statement that the RCMP has decided to lay charges. Although Bayne failed to specify the type of charges, he reiterated that his client did not commit a crime. Bayne stated that “we are confident that when the full story is told, as it will be, and shown to be supported by many forms of evidence, it will be clear that Sen. Duffy is innocent of any criminal wrong-doing.” He added that “despite Sen. Duffy’s serious on-going health problems, which compromise his strength, and despite his limited resources, he intends to defend fully and fairly and to show that the truth and innocence are on his side.”
