Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has spoken against members of council for their expenses in a recent statement regardless of the fact that collectively, the council allegedly used less money from their office budgets this year than the past.
The statement was released by Mr. Ford on Thursday afternoon, i.e. two days after the city released third quarter office expenses for the mayor and members of council totaling $682,545.24. If compared, the total amount turns out to be lower than previous years when Mr. Ford was mayor. Total expenses claimed in 2013 were $932,875.36, $910, 942.82 in 2012 and $997,875.81 in 2011. Since Ford came to power, Councilors are allowed a total of $30,000 in office budget, although they were only allotted $28,247.45 this year due to the civic election.
In his remarks, Mr. Ford stated that “I believe city council must lead by example when it comes to their expenses.” He alleged that “we have ended the lavish retirement parties paid for by taxpayers and reduced council expenses from $53,000 down to $30,000. We derailed the gravy train. Now, some councillors can’t wait to go back to the tax and spend days of the past. But this is not right, we must respect the residents who elected us by respecting their money and keep their taxes low.” Moreover, Ford also accused councilors of holding back on spending earlier in the year and saving larger expenses for the third quarter, since they were to be made public after the election.
