Another homeless Torontonian man died on the streets today after a fire broke out at a make shift shelter near Dufferin Concrete in the Sheppard Ave E and McCowan Rd. Firefighters confirmed to have learned about the fire at around 10: 30 pm on Tuesday and explained to have found the flames coming out from a shelter in a field behind the property, i.e. where the man’s body was discovered from.

The Ontario Fire Marshal have confirmed to be investigating the incident but officers are speculating that the fire would have been lit by the man to keep himself warm. On two separate occasions this week, two homeless Torontonian men have been found dead on the streets. One homeless man was found dead inside a truck at a west-end shipping yard, whereas the other was found lifeless by the police in a transit shelter near Yonge St and Dundas St W.

Addressing the seriousness of the matter on Wednesday morning, Mayor John Tory stressed that the death of even one homeless Torontonian is tragic and not acceptable. He stated that this is “why I’ve been devoting myself for the last couple of weeks, really probably as much as anything except…traffic, to try to do some things in the shorter term and the longer term as we work on the (city) budget to address the issue.” He alleged that “the need to make sure we were adequately flexible and showed discretion in favour of vulnerable people when it came to the declaration of the cold weather alerts so that we could open up the warming centres and not have in any way bureaucracy or paperwork…stand in the way of providing emergency shelter.”
