Addressing reporters at Queen’s Park on Wednesday, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has announced that her government will soon unveil a carbon-pricing plan. Premier Wynne reminded that Ontario, along with California, Quebec and British Columbia, agreed to a deal to devise a system to charge companies and consumers for burning carbon. She alleged that the time has come that Ontario delivers on that deal.
Ms. Wynne stated that “we need to now make that real in whatever form it takes,” adding that “we are going to move very quickly” and are going to unveil the plan this spring. She explained that the province has not yet decided whether to impose cap-and-trade or a carbon tax. However, she stressed that whatever the government decides “it will be real.” Wynne urged that “we have climate change…we are facing a global situation and it’s only responsible that Ontario do its part.” She stated that “I don’t think we can just throw up our hands and say ‘Well, we’re only 13.5 million people, and we don’t have to do our part.’ That’s not responsible. We need to be leaders in terms of the discussion across the country. Globally, we need to take our position and do our part.”
Sources confirm that Environment Minister, Glen Murray, is currently working on a strategy that aims to cut Ontario’s emissions 15 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050. The plan is anticipated to include pricing and other measures like cleaner fuel standards and energy conservation.
