Sears Canada has announced to help beleaguered Target Canada employees and asked them to apply for jobs and discounts at its stores. Target Canada announced on Thursday to shut down its operation in the country within the next five months, which would affect a total of 133 Canadian stores and more than 17,000 employees.

Whereas on the other hand, Sears Canada has announced to host job fairs across the country in order to accommodate Target employees while urging them to apply for jobs on its site too. The company mentioned that “there will also be an open invitation to Target Canada head office employees for a meet-and-greet with Sears executives and human resources experts on January 21 at Sears head office located at the Toronto Eaton Centre.” Sears alleged that it will “offer affected Target Canada employees the Sears Canada employee discount for a period of 16 weeks.”

The national president of the United Food and Commercial Workers, i.e. the union representing Target employees, Paul Meinema, criticized Target on its failures on Thursday as it stated that this “a direct result of its bully tactics and its disrespect for Canadian workers and shoppers.” Meinema added that “they kicked aside the Zellers workers who had many years of experience and good jobs that supported thousands of families. A good neighbour would have welcomed them. Instead, Target showed them the door.” Target has assured to keep its stores open during liquidation.
