A truck driver has died and two people are injured after a dreadful crash soon before rush hour traffic in Delta on Wednesday morning. The crash led to a complete shutdown of Highway 99 in both directions for hours. The vehicle involved in the crash, a tandem-axle commercial gravel truck, was wedged on the median between the north and southbound lanes.

Pictures and videos of the vicious crash were posted by witnesses on social media. According to Delta police, one person believed to be the driver of a semi-truck died in the crash. However, police refrained from confirming the identity of the deceased pending next-of-kin notification. According to the police, the two vehicles in the northbound lanes were struck by the truck and trailer, resulting in both drivers being hospitalized with non-life threatening injures.

Witnesses revealed that a few volunteers attempted to pull the truck driver out of the wreckage but failed due to the flames consuming the vehicle’s cab. Darlene Ward stated that “they had fire extinguishers and they were trying to extinguish the fire,” adding that “they did their best to get the guy out, but they had to give up.” Gary Edgar alleged that “with the diesel fuel leaking, one of the tires caught on fire and kind of went sky-high,” adding that “an air tank exploded and we were trying to get him out of there and it was just time to back off.”
