The son of former Newfoundland premier Brain Tobin has been charged. Jack Tobin, 24, was charged early Saturday with impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death and driving over the legal limit result in a death.
Victim and friend of Jack Tobin as been identified as Alex Zolpis, a 24-year-old student in his final year at Dalhousie University in Halifax.
Police say that after a night of drinking at a nearby pub, Tobin’s friend ended up trapped under a truck about an hour after local bars closed.
Tobin and two friends piled into a rented Dodge Ram pickup truck shortly before 3 a.m. and did doughnuts on the fifth, uncovered, level of a parking garage while other friends watched, police said.
The victim, either fell from a passenger seat or the truck’s bed as it spun around in circles and swerved, police say.
Several witnesses are presently being interviewed by the Ottawa Police. The investigation is ongoing.

What a difference in stories! THE GLOBE AND MAIL reports that young Tobin joined his friend to celebrate the great accomplishment of graduating from one of our prestigious Canadian universities. They deccomment_IDed to have a drink at their truck, then park it carefully and prudently and responsibly take a taxi home.
Nothing about donuts on the floor of a parking garage, or about people being flung from a stressed vehicle while people watched.
These stories are wildly divergent.
It will be interesting and perhaps distressing to see how the truth is discovered and any required penalties meted out.
