An Edmonton Police officer has been charged with one count of assault and one count of assault causing bodily harm in connection with an incident on March 4, 2010.

Sergeant Kevin Douglas is alleged to have committed a criminal assault on a person while in custody. After being lodged in cells and during the processing of this person, the Sergeant became engaged in an altercation with the individual. As a result of this incident the prisoner required medical treatment for his injuries.

Chief Boyd directed that a criminal investigation be conducted. The EPS Professional Standards Branch investigation findings are supported by a recommendation from the Crown Prosecutors office that the Sergeant should be charged criminally. This has resulted in Deputy Chief da Costa approving the laying of criminal charges.

Sergeant Douglas will make his first court appearance on February 18, 2011. The 41-year-old member who has been with the service for 17 years has been reassigned to a non-operational role.
