The federal elections are finally underway as Canadians head to the ballot boxes after 78-days of intensive campaigning. The election polls opened at 7:30 a.m. Monday and are set to close at 7:30 p.m. According to the most recent poll results published by Nanos Research, the Liberals are still seven points ahead after the campaign’s closing weekend.

A political scientist with the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, Bob Murray, mentioned in his remarks on Monday that “I think what we see is voters behaviours have changed. People’s preferences have changed.” He explained that “what became incredibly obvious is that people felt ready that Justin Trudeau might actually be prepared to take over as Prime Minister and people might be willing to give the Liberal Party a shot again.” Moreover, political pundits have pointed out that several Edmonton ridings hold key importance in this election since they were visited by both the Liberal and the NDP leaders at the end. In one of the riding, Edmonton City’s Councillor, Amarjeet Sohi, is running for Liberals against returning Conservative MP Tim Uppal. Whereas another riding in Griesbach will witness a face off of the Conservatives former Edmonton City Councillor, Kerry Diotte, against NDP Candidate Janis Irwin and the Liberal’s Brian Gold.

The advance polls on the Thanksgiving long-weekend reportedly increased by 71 per cent when compared from last federal election as more than 3.6 million voted in advance this year. The voter turnout in 2011 federal election was 61 per cent.
