Canada BasketballCanada Basketball announced the athletes who will represent Canada in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women, which will be played in Gurabo, Puerto Rico from August 15th – August 19th Players eligible for this competition must have been born on or after Jan. 1, 1994. The Canadian Junior Women’s National Team will be looking to medal in this event for the fifth consecutive time.

The event serves as a qualifier for the 2013 FIBA World U19 Championship for Women, which will be held in Lithuania. For Canada to qualify, they will need to reach the semi-finals in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women. Canada has qualified for the last four FIBA World U19 Championships and is currently ranked 4th in the FIBA youth women`s world rankings.

“We have a great representation of girls across the country, they went through a weekend of high intensity and effort and responded very well,” said head coach Andy Sparks. “We are looking forward to getting our execution down so that we are ready once the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women begins.”

“We are excited to see this group representing Canada and competing at the 2012 U18 FIBA Americas Championship for Women and build on the standard of excellence of our women’s age-group national team program with the ultimate goal of developing world class athletes for our senior women’s national team program,” said Director of Women’s High Performance, Denise Dignard.

The team has great experience from five players who have represented Canada in international competitions before. The five athletes include; Taijah Campbell (2011 FIBA U18 3×3 and 2011 Pan Am Games Team), Paige Crozon (2011 FIBA U18 3×3, 2011 Junior Women’s National Team and 2011 Pan Am Games Team) Kaylee Halvorson (2009 3×3 Youth Olympic Games), Isidora Purkovic (2009 and 2010 Cadette Women’s National Team, 2011 Junior Women’s National Team, and 2011 Pan Am Games Team) and Cheyanne Roger (2011 Cadette Women’s National Team).

Canada has been placed in Group “B” and will open the tournament against Brazil on August 15 (6 p.m. EDT), followed by Puerto Rico on August 16 (8:15 p.m. EDT) and Mexico on August 17 (6 p.m. EDT). The top two teams from Group A and Group B will advance to play for 1st-4th place, while the No. 3 and No. 4 ranked teams play out for 5th-8th place. The semifinals will be played on August 18 and the gold medal game will be held on August 19.

The 2012 Canadian Junior Women’s National Team will be led by head coach Andy Sparks and will be assisted by Donna Branch and Scott Edwards.
