England and Italy will contest their first competitive fixture for 15 years in the fourth and last quarter-final of Euro 2012 on Sunday in Olympic Stadium, Kiev. Both the teams share so many of the same characteristics that it is no wonder experts are expecting a tight encounter between them. Three aspects that the both sides are aiming to rely on are the solid defence, a talismanic midfielder and a potentially match-winning striker as they hope to face the Germans next Thursday in the second Semifinal.
England heads into this match as winners of their group after a draw with France (1-1) and wins over Sweden (3-2) and Ukraine (1-0). England is feeling high after two consecutive victories to emerge at the top of Group D and Wayne Rooney will lead the line again after he returned to score the only goal in the triumph over Ukraine, despite not looking particularly impressive.
England stands on the FIFA ranking of 7. The probable lineup for England include: Hart, Johnson, Terry, Lescott, Cole, Milner, Gerrard, Parker, Young, Rooney, Welbeck.
On the other hand, Italy advanced to the knock-out stage with draws against defending champions Spain (1-1) and Croatia (1-1) and a shutout of the Republic of Ireland (2-0). Their brilliant attack has taken them to heights in tournaments that most teams aren’t capable of reaching. However, their performance and aggressive nature was less then apparent during the Euro 2012 Group stage matches.
Italy has a FIFA ranking of 12. The Italians are facing a problem of lacking top players that guarantee a top-level performance and rely almost solely on Prandelli’s intuition. And one-man dependence cannot always be suitable to seal a win against the opposing team. The probable squad for Italy include: Buffon, Abate, Barzagli, Bonucci, Balzaretti, De Rossi, Pirlo, Marchisio, Montolivo, Balotelli, Cassano.
Italy will not prove to be a piece of cake for England but England come into this game most likely with a ton of motivation and confidence of making it through to the Semi-Finals.
