Starting from Today, Friday, 16 fast pitch teams from around the world play in Whitehorse, displaying the top female talent in the sport. Softball Yukon will host the 13th International Softball Federation (ISF) Women’s World Championships at the Pepsi Softball Centre from July 13-22. It won’t be the first time Whitehorse has hosted a softball event of this caliber, after bringing the 2008 ISF Junior Men’s Fast Pitch Championships to town in 2008 and hosting the 2007 Canada Winter Games.
This year marks the first time the ISF has hosted the tournament in a two-year rotation. In the past, the championships have been held once every four years. The tournament features 16 countries competing for the title of world champions that include: Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, South Africa, USA, and Venezuela. Sixty-six games will be played over the ten-day span.
Team Japan and Australia are to compete in section ‘B’ of the tournament, including the other teams of Canada, Chinese Taipei, Great Britain, Italy, Mexico and New Zealand.
Within the 2010 championships in Venezuela, Japanese team was defeated by the United States – the defending champions.
