During day 1 rain-interrupted first practice session, McLaren drivers Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton set the pace at the German Grand Prix.
Jenson was 0.498 seconds quicker than Lewis, with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso third, having put his finest time before the first of several showers while Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher was fourth ahead of Sauber’s Sergio Perez.
The teams were trying to improving their performances, with attention focused on McLaren and Lotus.
Due to the track not being used for F1 since 2010, there will be a considerable amount of progression throughout the race, with qualifying lap times likely to be around 5 to 6 seconds faster than Friday’s practice.
Pastor Maldonado emerged fastest from the second Friday practice session for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, as rain showers destined the sequence was largely decided by who was on track at the accurate moment.
Heavy rain before the session doomed a distinct lack of Formula 1 cars on track at first, bar Bruno Senna doing an installation lap in the Williams that Valtteri Bottas had crashed earlier in the morning.
It was 20 minutes in before Jean-Eric Vergne, Charles Pic and Nico Rosberg came out and got the afternoon underway in earnest. Conditions were gradually improving, and after 20 minutes later Rosberg toggled from full wets to intermediates on his Mercedes, which sooner followed by everyone else.
