Silverbacks sit one point ahead of Eddies
FC Edmonton looks to find some consistency starting on the road as the team heads into its third clash of the season against the Atlanta
Silverbacks on Saturday (K.O @ 5:30pm MDT).
Since Eric Wynalda took over the reigns as head coach in Atlanta, the remainder of the Silverbacks season doesn’t look quite as daunting with a 2-0-1 start. Atlanta’s record against the Eddies is not as flattering, having lost all their games in the 2011 season, and only winning one so far this year.
The last time these two teams met in Edmonton the Silverbacks took the early lead with the Eddies unable to find their way back into the game. With one win against each other this season and a combined total of six wins for both teams, each side will be fighting to stay off the bottom of the league table and climb back into the playoff race.
FC Edmonton is coming off a heartbreaking last minute loss to the Tampa Bay Rowdies at home, where Luke Mulholland scored the game winner in the 88th minute.
“We’re at a point now where we need to earn points on the road more than ever,” said captain Chris Kooy. “These next two games will be crucial if we expect to be playing in October.”
With the recent announcement of the contract extension for both head coach Harry Sinkgraven and assistant coach Hans Schrijver into the 2013 season, and the signing of Scottish defender David Proctor, the Eddies look to calm the waters before they push for the end of the season.
Only one point separates these two teams in the NASL standings (FC Edmonton 13, Atlanta Silverbacks 14), this game is an important step towards the battle for the last playoff spot.
